| Description | A constitution for missionary federation in Kenya was first drafted in 1909 and further conferences were held in 1911 and 1913. Much controversy followed the June 1913 conference over problems of inter-communion; the Conference was called to consider a scheme for federation of missionary societies working in British East Africa. In 1914 a series of pamphlets (including 'The Church in the Mission Field' by Eugene Stock) were published under the title of 'Kikuyu Tracts' in order to 'help towards clear thinking on the larger questions which lie behind [the issues debated after Kikuyu 1913]'. An alliance of societies working in British East Africa, with a representative council, was finally formed at the second Kikuyu conference of 1918 (CMS, Church of Scotland, Africa Inland Mission and United Methodist Church Mission). |
