TitleLetter from Reverend Theophilus Blumhardt, Basel
Extent1 item
Date1837
DescriptionDated 12 January. Has heard from Isenberg of Gobat's ill health which has forced him to return to Basel; he is expected in the spring; Krapf is waiting for his passport before he can come to London; has heard from Hoernle and Schneider at Tebriz that they are willing to transfer to CMS service at Agra, but they wish to marry first and therefore proposed coming to Germany and England before going to India; they would both have been allowed to marry had they continued to work for Basel as they are 32 and 31 years old and have four years experience as missionaries; for them to return through Persia would be very dangerous as the physician to the English embassy at Tehran has reported that the distribution of Martyn's New Testament has roused 'the mob against them'; the situation is worse at Isfahan and Shiraz; asks for CMS advice; proposes Mr Wolters of their Persia mission as an assistant for Mr Hildner at Syra; 'I am sure that you will take your measure to limit the expenses of our friends; many of them seem not to exercise a deliberate discretion about this point.'
