Description
Dated 30 January. Has made an exploratory journey to Russia with brother Zaremba to begin mission work on the Russian frontier; needed Emperor's permission which has been given and they are about to start for Astrachan; they will stay there with the Scottish brethren for about two months studying Persian and Turkish; they then hope to go to Tiflis [Tbilisi] and the Persian frontier near the river Khur and the town of Baku seeking land for a missionary settlement; the Russian Bible Society at St Petersburg has given them letters to the Auxiliary Societies and depots at Astrachan, Georgiusk and Tiflis; asks for a letter of commendation and introduction to the British agent there as 'the protection of an English ambassador is of great importance in Persia'.
