Description | Dated 14-23 May. It is nine years since he met Bickersteth at Islington. The work here was begun in 1827 by Zaremba, Hohenacher and Pfander; there is opposition from the Muslims but much work amongst the Armenian Christians. More schools would be welcomed as they only have one central school and four young men training as schoolmasters; there is a great need for schoolbooks; they have begun a translation of the New Testament into 'the vulgar tongue of the Araratian provinces'; 'three young men have joined us' and are studying in English; there is a good English/Armenian dictionary and grammar, but the men need good English books of divinity; asks Bickersteth 'as a private Christian friend' to send small supply of books and gives list of about 14 books which he most needs; the books may be sent care of Mr Moore, agent of the Moravian Brethren, that he may send them to the house of Asmus Simonsen at St Petersburgh with instructions to send them to Tiflis to the care of Pastor Saltet. |
