Description
Dated 31 January. Will leave Basel 6 February as his ordination papers have now arrived from Wurttemberg; thanks CMS for appointing him to Abyssinia; agrees with the principles of the Church of England and is happy to use the Book of Common Prayer; assumes his instructions are the same as for those already in Abyssinia; asks for permission to go from Egypt to Abyssinia via Nubia, Senaar to Gondar and on to Enarea and Caffa 'for I conjecture from various accounts that there are still Christian remainders' particularly perhaps in Sedama, about which Gobat has written 'thus I think the key would have been given to the missionary-society to enter from east into the barred gates of the interior of Africa'; will go to Egypt via Marseilles and Malta.
