Including letters sent from countries in Western Europe and North America, Apia, Auckland, Australia, Baghdad, Batavia, Cairo, Colombo, Ceylon, Danish Accra, Fernando Po, [India], Jamaica, Jerusalem, Mauritius, Monrovia, Onitsha, St Helena, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tobago, West Indies and Yedo. Although predominantly from overseas correspondents, this sequence incorporates some items sent from within the UK concerning British missionaries (chiefly missionaries' and prospective missionaries' medical papers 1857-1866, letters concerning language work and publications and correspondence from missionaries residing in the UK).
Comprising: reports of local work; correspondence about language work, CMS publications and proposals for the development of mission work overseas; letters written to alert the CMS to areas in need of missionaries; responses to CMS financial appeals and requests for financial support from CMS. Also a few letters from, and concerning, missionaries, prospective missionary wives and prospective missionary candidates including offer of service letters.
The letters are endorsed with clerk's annotations in red ink giving the date, name and location of the correspondent and marked with the date of receipt and a brief record of action taken including dates of committee meetings at which the letter was considered.
