TitleLetter from Richard Panton, Archdeacon of Surrey, Jamaica
Extent1 item
Date1858
DescriptionDated 10 July. Refers to Robert Gordon, Jamaican schoolmaster who is coming to London to CMS to present himself as a candidate for ordination; he has failed to obtain tesimonials from clergy in Jamaica having twice been dismissed from his situation as schoolmaster; if he alleges that he has not been ordained because of 'prejudice against "the colour of his skin" (he has said so) ... this is far from the truth. When your missionary, Mr Wiltshire, was here lately our pulpits were freely opened to him. Indeed we would be glad of an opportunity to show that we entertain no such sinful prejudice'.
