Description | Precis book for meetings of the Foreign Literature Committee 8 October 1901-22 February 1904. Comprising mimeographed typescript, printed and manuscript extracts of agenda papers with related Committee resolutions, recommendations and action written in black and red ink.
The agenda items are numbered 1-17, giving the despatch number, date, name and (location) of correspondent, date of receipt, a summary of the contents and business [for recommendation or resolution] on the left hand page, with related committee resolutions, recommendations and action taken ('how disposed of') on the right hand page. The latter largely records the date on which the resolution or recommendation was adopted (usually by the Committee of Corr[espondence]) or the initials of the Secretary responsible for correspondence arising from the recommendations or resolutions agreed at the meeting with the date of said correspondence.
The Committee arose out of the work of the Society's Three Years' Enterprise. It was appointed in 1901 on the recommendation of Centenary Committee B, Section III to consider issues relating to the 'translation of religious and other books, including the Prayer-book, and the collection, preparation, production, and organization of the circulation of religious and educational literature in various languages' for use in CMS missions; they were also responsible for recommending grants to fund such work. |
