The Sub-Committee was appointed by the General Committee to consider resolutions that had been passed at a meeting of the bishops of the Province of India and Ceylon held in Calcutta March 1877. The Resolutions concerned the relationship between bishops and the CMS in a mission area and reaffirmed that ultimate responsibility in overseas work lay with the bishops. The Laws and Regulations Sub-Committee was appointed 11 June 1877 to consider Laws 32 and 33 and Appendix II to the 39th Report which concerned the ecclesiastical position of CMS missionaries.
