In 1856, the Committee of Correspondence was asked to report on, and add documentation to, a printed paper on the Baptism of Polygamists presented at the General Committee 8 December. The Polygamy Sub-Committee was appointed 3 July 1883. The marriage Sub-Committee was appointed 4 November 1884 on receipt of a memorandum from S[amuel] A[djai] Crowther, dated September 1884, in which he explains why there are difficulties in the marriage of Christian converts in the Niger Mission according to the the 'Rite and Ceremony of the Church of England', including reference to the issue of re-marriage of converts who had been married under local law prior to converting to Chrisitianity (source: the minutes CMS/G C1).
