TitleLetter from Klein to Pratt: 8 November 1814: Gambier
Extent1 doc.
Date1814
DescriptionThe station is isolated in the bush. He has engaged labour to clear bush, add to house buildings, and build a schoolhouse. He is disappointed that Fernandez has not honoured his promise of children for the school. The rumour that Butscher and Renner were active in bringing in the anti-slave trade forces may explain this. His isolation makes progress in the language difficult. Natives shun the place for its reputation of being haunted; his boys are terrorised by this fear.
Correspondence with Fernandez suggested that as time and place are unsuitable for a school and missionary settlement, a new settlement on different lines should be formed under Fernandez' patronage. This, after long delay, brought an outburst from Fernandez of having been fooled by Butscher and Klein decided to evacuate the settlement. On his way to S. L. he was welcomed at the Isles do Los by chiefs and English merchants who promised backing if he would settle there. With CMS permission he will establish a settlement there after the rains, staying meanwhile in S. L. at a house offered free by the merchant Carr.
