TitleLetter from Hughes to Pratt: 8 December 1815: Goree
Extent1 doc.
Date1815
DescriptionHughes denies all knowledge of anything he may have done to injure his character or sacrifice Pratt's confidence. He only spoke his mind as was his duty. Mrs. Hartwig's report that Mrs. Hughes claimed deception by a Committee member [see E5/27] was false.
Lack of communication from Pratt had almost decided him to return home but now he will remain and continue his work. Chisholm has greatly helped him and provided furniture for the school. The boys school opened on 15 May and he now has 41 boys and 23 girls. At first they had to be very cautious about religious instruction but now they have gained the parents' confidence. 3 previous attempts to open a school at Goree all failed.
