Description | Offers service of himself and four gentlemen as corresponding committee; encloses copy of note by Major Munro, the resident, concerning Mr. Ringeltaube's Protestant mission; it was not possible to send help, as this would have been temporary and might, in the meanwhile, have lost them their present chances in Madras, Dr. Rottler's little congregation and chapel; had mentioned earlier a need for English missionaries rather than foreigners, but foreigners are more acceptable in some ways, as the regular chaplain of Black Town (as Madras is usually called) is unwilling to admit an English missionary to his pulpit; has discovered from Mecamp's 'Hist. Miss Danicae' that a mission was founded in Madras by Schulze, but no trace of this remains; if Schulze's Telegu or Gentoo translations could be found, possibly at Halle in Saxony (where he retired) they would be invaluable
