DescriptionThe aim of establishing a college in Travancore was to teach the catanars and officiating priests among the Syrians a "competent Knowledge" of the Syrian language; by transcribing the bible and other religious books the students would be educated and at the same time a supply of Syrian scriptures would be obtained; the college would also have included instruction in Malayalim; the only funds of the college are the interest of 3000 pagodas vested by Colonel Macaulay in government securities for the benefit of the Syrians; the financial position is exacerbated by the dispute between the two Syrian bishops; the government's poilcy is non-interference in the internal affairs of the country; the position will be improved by the arrival of the bishop [of Calcutta]; encloses papers on the state of Christianity [21-22].
