Administrative History'Desmond Painter was born in 1933 and grew up in Hertfordshire. He was educated at Rendcomb College, Cirencester, and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. After National Service in the Royal Artillery he taught history in schools in Nigeria and Hertfordshire, and at a Teacher Training College in Dorset, after which he moved to Bournemouth and for some years taught law at Bournemouth University. After retiring, and knowing little about Arthur Painter except that he had been a CMS missionary in India, he tried to fill the gap in his family history by writing a short biography of his grandfather.'
