Description | This collection relates to Gwynne's lengthy career as clergyman and missionary. It includes an incomplete series of Gwynne's diaries, 1884-1957, together with some devotional diaries and appointment diaries. It also includes a series of 50 notebooks containing sermons and addresses which he delivered over the period 1906-1957. Other material includes correspondence, including letters from Gwynne to Miss Estelle Blythe, 1910-1956 and to Rev Morris Gelsthorpe, Assistant Bishop of Egypt and the Sudan, other letters received by him and some subject correspondence files. It also includes typescripts, manuscripts printed copies of some of his writings and photographs relating mostly to Sudan and Egypt. Gwynne also compiled an army book relating to the service of army chaplains during the First World War which contains manuscript biographical information and newscuttings with illustrations, with a name index. |
Administrative History | Llewellyn Henry Gwynne, (1863-1957) Bishop of Egypt. Gwynne was vicar of Emmanuel Church, Nottingham 1892-1898; CMS missionary to Sudan 1899-1905; Archdeacon of Sudan, 1908; and Army Chaplain in Europe 1914-1919. He returned to Sudan 1919 and became Bishop of Egypt and the Sudan in 1921. He retired to England 1946 and died in 1957. Reference: Finding aid |
