| Administrative History | Harry (also known and Henry) Campbell Guyer, of Old Charlton, S. E., was a marine engineer when he applied to become a missionary. A former pupil of Colfe's Grammer School, Lewisham, in 1899 he enrolled at the CMS Preparatory Institution before moving on to complete his training at Church Missionary College, Islington in 1900. CMS accepted his offer of service 2 July 1901 and he left England for the CMS 'Punjab Mission' 30 October of the same year.
Until his first furlough in England (April 1909), he was based at the CMS mission station in Dera Ghazi Khan. When he returned to the 'Punjab Mission' in March 1910 he moved to Dera Ismail Khan and this was to be his mission station for the rest of his CMS service. He left India for his second furlough in England in March 1914 and set sail for the return trip to Dera Ismail Khan October 1914. During the First World War he was attached to the Royal Engineers as Dera Ismail Khan Barrack Master (1917) but continued to manage the CMS school there at the same time. He travelled to Engand for the third time 14 May 1921 and returned to Dera Ismail Khan the following January. He resigned from CMS 25 May 1932.
He died in Tenterden, Kent, 3 March 1953.
Marriage: an 'office note' in the annotated 'CMS Register of Missionaries...1804-1904' records that he 'apparently married after retirement as his widow (d 1927) survives him'. Awards: OBE, 1921; Kaiser-i-Hind Medal, 1st class 1927. |
