Administrative HistoryJanani Luwum (1922-1977) was ordained as a priest in 1956 and in 1969 rose to the office of bishop of Northern Uganda where he came into conflict with the regime of Idi Amin who took power in Uganda in 1971. Even after becoming Archbishop of Uganda in 1974 Janani Luwum continued his opposition to Amin's dictatorship until he was eventually arrested on charges of treason and was shot by Amin's troops in 1977.
