DescriptionThis collection comprises journals, diaries and notebooks kept by Herbert Biggs from his childhood until his death recording his collection of natural history specimens, his military service during the First world War, his family life and missionary service in the Middle East and his life as a parish priest on returning to England. Other material includes photographs, medals and army papers and a hymn book dating from 1833.

Administrative HistoryHerbert Edwin James Biggs (1895-1973) was a CMS missionary from 1921 to 1942, serving in Isfahan and Kerman in the Persian Mission 1922 to 1935 and in the Deputation Department of the CMS headquarters staff 1942-1944. After leaving the CMS Biggs was appointed Rector of Mellis and Burgate in Suffolk, a position he held until his retirement in 1948. In retirement he worked as Metropolitan Secretary for the United Society for Christian Literature 1948-1952 and later as Assistant Home Secretary. He also served as President of the Conchological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1924 he married Phyllis Winifred Cooke who died in 1962.
