TitleLetter from Corrie to Phipps: Calcutta [Kolkata]
Extent1 doc.
Date1828
Description11 Feb: Brown has done well in Persian and will soon be out of college; he seems genuinely religious; Phipps may have already met Corrie's family who have gone home for the children's education; Corrie and Mrs. Ellerton are now in Thomason's house and Goode and Bird also use it; the new bishop has become president of CMS, has joined the Bible Society and shows good judgement and kindness; he has shown Mill and Robinson there were faults on both sides and they are outwardly friendly; he has rebuked Mill for the slackness in college lecturing and his severity towards his best student Dunsmore; Craven's grievance he referred home; in the matter of the complaints from Wilson, Reichardt and Steward, the bishop obtained an apology from Steward to the Committee and rejected the claim of Reichardt and Wilson to sit in committee and be paid the same rate as SPG missionaries; in the matter of Greenwood's claim for arrears of salary the bishop found he had relinquished his salary when keeping school for profit; Greenwood is now going home to publish his grievance, and accuses Corrie of having prevented his getting a government salary for his English services, because Corrie applied for a government allowance for Morris, who has Hindustani, whereas Greenwood has only English; Corrie's having applied for government chaplains at Chinsurah and Howrah in place of missionaries who had been doing duty instead of mission work has been much resented; there is some progress in evangelisation at Burdwan, though Wilson has acted there in a most tactless way
