Description24 May 1831: In view of the situation at home the Calcutta Corresponding Committee have prepared for a retrenchment policy at Salisbury Square, by drawing £500 less than the grant for 1829-1830 and £1,500 less for 1830-1831, and by not founding any new schools though opportunities are many; the treasurer holds 4,000 rupees and 3,000 rupees have come from printing done for the Bombay Education society; now the natives themselves are raising subscriptions for schools; the Hindu College is criticised by its own council for not attaching its pupils to Hinduism, and upwards of 200 boys have been withdrawn, twelve of whom have become pupils in the High School; there is a breakaway movement to defy caste, and the privileges are being claimed by babus and half-castes; the Calcutta Corresponding Committee is on the alert to seize any opportunities these movements present; there are new papers, the 'Reformer' and 'The Enquirer', the latter of which has been started by a half-caste and is supported by English friends of education because it professes to avoid politics; Corrie will send a copy; the bishop has returned very fatigued from a visit to Madras, Bombay and Ceylon; he finds Cotta the model mission and feels missions stations should be in quieter places than presidency capitals; he wishes to strengthen Brudwan, Gorakhpur and Benares including Chunar with three missionaries at each station;
3 June 1831: Will send the bishop's report on the High School; is anxiously awaiting the debate on the East India Company charter
