| Description | 27 Dec 1831: Reports good impressions from the school examinations at Dumdum and Mirzapore; the Hindus are now teaching English which accounts for the falling numbers in Christian schools, but Christians must continue their plan of using scripture as a class-book in their teaching; at Mirzapore there were 47 native communicants on Christmas Day, and on the 26th 12 adults and 6 children were baptised and a jubilee feast was given at Corrie's expense; among the participants was the young babu who edits the 'Enquirer'; he had been under the influence of H. de Manio, a poet and former teacher at the Hindu College, responsible for leading many youths into atheism; de Manio came under the influence of Macpherson, chaplain of St. James, and died of cholera on 26th [?Nov], confessing the Christian faith; hopes his example may influence many of his former pupils; the question of excluding Socinians has come up again in the report on the Naval and Military Bible Society and is dividing adherents; 31 Dec 1831: Headquarters seem under misapprehension in Eteson's case; he is not entirely detached from mission work, but was placed in charge of the Chunar schools in Nov; he is only an assistant chaplain on half-allowance, without pension or pay, even when sick, if he leaves his station; Wilkinson is in exactly the same position at Gorakhpur; the Committee does not object to their holding English services, but wants government to pay them for it |
