| Administrative History | John Fearby Haslam (1811-1850) of Halifax, Yorkshire was educated at St John's College, Cambridge, gaining his BA in 1836. He was ordained a deacon in 1836 and a priest in 1837 and became curate of Chesterfield. In 1838 he was accepted as a CMS missionary and went to Ceylon as Principal of the Cotta Institution. He died at Colpetty in 1850 after nearly 12 years service. He was married twice: to Elizabeth Denton in 1837 (d 1839) and to Sophia Elizabeth Bailey, a CMS missionary, in 1842 (d 1873).
He translated Dr Mill's 'Life of Christ' from Sanskrit into Singhalese, compiled an Arithmetic in Singhalese and a Vocabulary in Singhalese and English, and assisted in the revision of the Singhalese Bible. |
