Administrative HistoryLewen Street Tugwell (1835-1898), teacher, later missionary, was admitted to the Church Missionary College in 1856. Ordained in 1860, on 18 June he went to British Columbia where he served until failing health led to him returning to England in March 1862. During his service, he baptised the first Tsimshean converts in 1861. His connexion with the CMS was closed in 1864.

From 1867 to 1873, he served as chaplain at Seville and in 1874 he became the Secretary and Director of the Spanish, Portugese and Mexican Church Aid Society. In 1878, became the perpetual curate of the Chaple of Ease, Tunbridge Wells. He married Harriet Greenwood, daughter of CMS missionary, Charles Greenwood.

Two of his cousins, Herbert Tugwell and Henry Charles Tugwell, were also CMS missionaries. A third cousin, Sarah Lewis (née Tugwell) was married to CMS missionary, Henry Lewis.
