Description | General research papers organised into two folders (Parts I-II), with Part II further sub-divided into folders a-b, and then in very approximate chronological order according to the subject matter of the papers; within each folder of papers there is a running sequence of pagination that corresponds to the table of contents that appears at the beginning of each folder (these seem to have been compiled either by Gibbs or the microfilmers of the collection); papers comprise typescript notes, printed material, manuscript notes and manuscript illustrations; the papers accompany Sub-Series DA1/1/1, with cross-referencing details/annotations throughout; the typescript notes are compiled from publications (historical/biographical monographs including material drawn from the Hansard series) and archives (including SPCK Annual Reports, papers of the CMS, and the SPG, and the archive holdings of various Indian repositories including the Indian National Archives (New Delhi) which Gibbs consulted whilst in India); the papers relate to the general history of the establishment and development of the Church in India, from the creation of the See of Calcutta and the award of Letters Patent, to the development of the different dioceses and archdeaconries, the granting of missionary licenses, the activities and family backgrounds of missionaries and prominent Churchmen (includes provision of family trees), and the development of the constitution of the Indian Episcopal Synod; the papers also include material relating to the general historical context |
