DescriptionLetters to James Rendel Harris from James Edward Hanauer [Jerusalem]. Hanauer writes from Jerusalem, where he has been exploring ancient sites. These include a site near the Tomb of the Prophets at Olivet, where he found an inscription; he encloses tracings of it.. Outside Jerusalem, he finds tiles from the tenth legion and a series of rock hewn chambers thought to be Jebusite houses. He finds an inscription at St Stephens which no-one else is allowed to copy. A translation of this inscription has been published in the French periodical 'Cosmos'. An inscription has also been found in St Isaiah's chapel. He visits Siloam and talks of changes to the village and tombs which have been altered to become dwelling places during the Middle Ages. There are signs of an Essene community in the Kedron Valley; evidence of their cooking has been found and some tiles have been excavated. He thanks Rendel Harris for sending him a copy of his book 'Codex Algerinae Peckover'.
