Description | Letters written to James Rendel Harris from Joseph Barber Lightfoot, Bishop of Durham, several of which (/1 and /4-8 ) were written by his Domestic Chaplain, JR Harmer on his behalf.
The letters date from the last few years of Lightfoot's life, and although there are references to his failing health, he was still an active researcher and the letters make reference to his researches. Several of the letters are written from Bournemouth. The letters include thanks to Rendel Harris for his scholarly advice, and also concern the loan of research materials.
/1 Harmer says that Lightfoot is working on an Essay on Hippolytus for his larger edition of St. Clement of Rome, 20 August 1897; /2 requests a reference to Rendel Harris's article on 'Ignatiana' from the 'Journal of the Exegetical Society', 10 April 1888; /4 has heard from Professor Hort about Rendel Harris's discovery of the manuscript of the Martyrdom of Polycarp refers to the second edition of the 'Ignatian Epistles' being at the press, 11 January 1889; /6 is delighted to think that so much new light will be shed by discovery of manuscript of the Colbestine Acts, 20 February 1889; /7 thanks Rendel Harris for materials which will be used in an appendix of his publication on the Ignatian Epistle, 29 April 1889; /8 acknowledges receipt of the photographs of the Manuscripts of the Antiochene Acts and Epistles to the Romans.
