Additional notes from researcher Deberniere Torrey, 13 July 2022:
/40: 'Lazarus carrying firewood on a ‘jige’ or A-frame'. ‘Lazarus’ later became a Benedictine monk. The photo was taken at Jesus Abbey in Gangwan Province, S. Korea, an intentional Christian community (ecumenical) founded by Fr. Reuben Archer Torrey III (known as Archer Torrey), who was the principal of St. Michael’s Seminary in Seoul, S. Korea from 1957-1965, after which he left the seminary to start Jesus Abbey (‘Yesuwon’ in Korean), which is still an active Christian community in S. Korea. The photo was taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s. Handwriting is Archer Torrey’s (as identified by daughter, Deberniere Torrey).
/41: 'Water Carrier'. I am almost certain this was also taken at Jesus Abbey around the same time as the above photo. I recognise the buildings and recall seeing a copy of this photo and the previous one in my parents’ possession. I can’t identify the men. Not Archer Torrey’s handwriting.
/45: 'Activities. Japanese and Koreans together entertaining visitors'. Photo of the common room at Jesus Abbey, late 1960s. The blond child at the left is me (Deberniere, “Bunny”), born October 1966, so my guess is the photo is from summer 1968 or 1969. The young Western man in the foreground is Brad Long, son of a US government employee in S Korea. The young Western man in foreground with back of head to camera is most likely Ben Torrey, son of Jesus Abbey founder Archer Torrey (Ben can be seen as a ‘young boy’ in a photo in the DA24/11/2/9d. At right corner foreground in profile is Samuel Lee, injured by a landmine in post-war S.Korea (note scarred face and prosthetic hand). Handwriting: Archer Torrey.
/46: 'Activities (8) Enjoying the sun'. Jesus Abbey community members. Late 1960s.The Jesus Abbey community, though ecumenical (most members over the years were of various Christian denominations). It still is semi-officially part of the Korean Anglican Church because of Archer Torrey’s status as an Anglican priest, and Torrey likely sent these photos to show the activities of the newly-founded community to the C of E headquarters.
/47: 'Beginning of a church'. This is a photo of the tent where Archer Torrey and former St. Michael’s seminarians and other Korean Anglican friends lived while they built the Jesus Abbey community. Summer 1965, Gangwan Province, South Korea |
