| Description | Official correspondence and copy correspondence of Lesslie Newbigin, telegrams, press cuttings, printed material including printed reports of the Church of South India (CSI) Ramnad and Madura Diocese, 1949-1951, and other papers relating to general affairs of Newbigin as Bishop of Madura and Ramnad.
The majority of the correspondence is with Rev Raymond A. Dudley, Sec for India and Ceylon, American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), and relates to the management of missionary operations in the diocese. Matters referred to include the recruitment, training, placement and general affairs of missionaries in the area, the training, recruitment and management of staff and finances in the medical and educational establishments supported by the missions in the area, and general activities of the ABCFM including the Oberlin scheme. In addition there is material relating to the development and general affairs of the CSI including discussions regarding the unification of ministry in North India and Ceylon, 1949, the withdrawal of support by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG), diocesan council meetings in Madura, and international conferences and assemblies, including the Council for the Defence of Church Principles held at the Cowley Fathers, Oxford, 1953, the Ghana Assembly, 1958, and the Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches (WCC) at Evanston, 1954. There is also material relating to the publications of Newbigin, his temporary return to England in 1952, and his tour of the USA in 1954.
