Extent3 boxes; 23 files
Date1937-1947
DescriptionFiles of draft manuscript and typed catalogue descriptions of manuscripts in the Mingana Collection, created for the fourth volume of the catalogue of the collection. The descriptions were originally filed by subject area: history and biography; grammar and philology; adab, for example. Some of the descriptions are by Mingana; some are probably by Hans Gottschalk, who was Curator of the collection from 1938-1947. There are also lists of manuscripts loaned in the 1950s to AF Beeston and J Trimingham, who contributed descriptions to the fourth volume of the catalogue; and cuttings from Volume I of the published catalogue of the Collection.
ArrangementThe files have been listed in their original order as a single series. The following files were boxed together: DA66/1/1/1-9; DA66/1/1/10-16; DA66/1/1/17-23.

Administrative HistoryHans Gottschalk, who succeeded Mingana as Curator of the Collection in 1938, worked on the fourth volume of the catalogue of the Mingana Collection, using descriptions left by Mingana. Progress, however, was slow, and the catalogue was nowhere near completion when Gottschalk left the Selly Oak Colleges for a post in Vienna in 1947. Manuscripts were lent for cataloguing to AF Beeston and J Trimingham and the catalogue was finally published in 1963, edited by Derek Hopwood. A revised edition was published in 1985.
