Administrative HistoryThe Stage Licensing Act of 1737 and the Theatres Act of 1843 legally required all plays intended for public performance to be submitted to the Lord Chamberlain's Office for examination and licensing. The Theatre Act, 1968 abolished the censorship of plays, by removing this requirement for submission to the Lord Chamberlain.
