Description | Sequence of numbered notebooks belonging to Sydney Race, containing his research notes for articles and correspondence submitted to 'Notes and Queries'. Many of the notebooks relate specifically to the work of John Payne Collier (1789-1883), Shakespearean critic and forger, and the controversy surrounding the authenticity of his findings on William Shakespeare. Each notebook is annotated with a rough index of contents. Common abbreviations used in these indexes include: JPC (John Payne Collier); EKC (Edmund Kerchever Chambers); JOHP (J. O. Halliwell-Phillipps); BJ (Ben Jonson); SF (Simon Forman); DW (Dover Wilson); HCR (Henry Crabb Robinson); BM (British Museum); N&Q (Notes and Queries); RES (Review of English Studies); MLR (Modern Language Review); HEDP (History of English Dramatic Poetry, by J. P. Collier, 1831) |
Arrangement | Notebooks 1-38 are part of Race's original numbered sequence [for index compiled by Sydney Race, see file ref. DSH6/3/1]. The remaining two notebooks are not numbered, and did not form part of the original sequence. They have been placed at the end of the series. |
