Description | Most of the letters are written by Emily Beaufort to Harriet Martineau, but some correspondence are from, or to, Emily's sister Rosamond E. Beaufort, known as Rosa.
The letters from Emily were written before she married in 1862 and took the name of Emily Anne Smythe, wife of 8th Viscount Strangford.
Smythe [nee Beaufort], Emily Anne, Viscountess Strangford (1826-1887), military nurse, was the youngest daughter of Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort (1774-1857), hydrographer, and his first wife, Alicia Magdalena (1782-1834). In 1861 she published her book 'Egyptian Sepulchres and Syrian Shrines'. The book was a popular success, and was reviewed by Percy Ellen Algernon Frederick William Sydney Smythe, 8th Viscount Strangford (1825-1869), diplomatist and orientalist. Emily Beaufort married Percy on 6 February 1862. (Information from the Oxford DNB online). |
