Administrative HistorySmythe [née Beaufort], Emily Anne, Viscountess Strangford (bap. 1826, d. 1887), military nurse, the youngest daughter of Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort, and his first wife, Alicia Magdalena. In 1861 she published Egyptian Sepulchres and Syrian Shrines (2 vols.), to which she contributed text and fine illustrations. The book was a popular success, and was reviewed by Percy Ellen Algernon Frederick William Sydney Smythe, eighth Viscount Strangford (1825-1869), diplomatist and orientalist. The couple subsequently married on 6 February 1862, London.
