TitleCorrespondence relating to Charlotte Bronte and her biographer Mrs Gaskell
Extent23 items
Date1850-1857
DescriptionThis series of letters mostly dated 1857 relates to discussions surrounding Elizabeth Gaskell's book, a biography called 'The Life of Charlotte Bronte' which was published in 1857. The 3rd edition withdrew some material and statements contained in the first two editions as there were many inaccuracies, including entries about Harriet Martineau. The correspondence in this series is mainly between Harriet Martineau; Elizabeth Gaskell; Charlotte Bronte's father, Patrick Bronte; and Charlotte's widowed husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls.

Charlotte Bronte, (1816-1855) afterwards Nicholls, novelist and poet. Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, (1810-1865) nee Stevenson, novelist.
