TitleLetter from Harriet Martineau to Mrs Procter, Tuesday
Extent1 item
Date[1833]
DescriptionAccepts invitation to wait on her, with Mrs Reid, on Wednesday and apologises for not sending a reply with her servant because the painter of her portrait whom she describes as 'that greatest of despots' was waiting for her.

[Harriet Martineau's portrait was painted on numerous occasions. She sat for Richard Evans (1784-1871, portrait painter) in 1833 and it is possibly this painter to whom she refers in the above letter. A later portrait was produced by George Richmond (1809-1896, portrait painter) in 1851 and Martineau sat for Margaret Gillies (1803-1887, painter) in 1832 for a miniature and Gillies went on to produce several other portraits].
