The first letter is addressed from 18 Up[per] Gloucester Place [London]; the second bears no address. The first letter requests information 'about Hamerton and his book and his powers as an artist' on behalf of Harriet Martineau 'who is vexed with me for not having already complied with her request for information'. The second is a letter of thanks 'for your note & for the drawing' which he had sent on to Harriet Martineau and he continues 'by the enclosed [presumably a reference to HM L Add 120] which you can burn you see the lady seems now satisfied with our difficult discoveries about Hamerton - all thanks to you'.
