Frederick Knight Hunt was Editor of the Daily News from 1851 until his death in 1854 and Harriet Martineau wrote and contributed numerous leaders, articles and obituaries for this publication from 1852 until 1866. These two lengthy letters relate, amongst other things, to this publication, the articles it carried and to Martineau's contributions. The subject matter of the letters discusses the Crimea War, 'a case of collusion in a lunatic asylum near Norwich' [historic term for a psychiatric hospital], nursing, and Florence Nightingale.
