TitleLetter from Harriet Martineau to Mr Robinson
Extent1 item
Date1869
DescriptionIncomplete letter consisting of four sides to a Mr. Robinson dated February 15th 1869 from Ambleside. Martineau writes to Mr. Robinson to request the help of himself and his wife with the manuscript she encloses with the letter. She asks Mr. Robinson to comment honestly on the work and if it is suitable for a preface. Martineau writes '...I have seldom - scarcely ever- written any Preface to my books, because I think a book written with due clearness and finish ought not to need any introduction to the reader..' Martineau is clearly very unsure of the quality of the work she has produced for the preface and sincerely wishes to receive advice on whether it is worthy to publish stating '...I have strong doubts of it myself: but then I am so ill that I know I sh[oul]d feel the same about anything else that I might write..' She goes on to praise a review in the 'Pall Mall' stating 'the comrade spirit praises me greatly...I dare say you know who wrote it' and speaks about the numerous old ladies claiming to be old classmates of hers which amuses her since she never even went to school.
