| Description | Letter written from Ambleside to Foxholes, dated 25 November discussing her health, family news and the weather. Harriet also notes that she and Florence Nightingale have given their names to Mrs Butler's committee [Josephine Butler had established the Ladies National Association for the Repeal of the Contagious Diseases Acts in 1869], and the 'Daily News' has given permission for some of Harriet's articles to be reprinted as pamphlets in support of the committee. Harriet also comments at length on the Byron-Stowe affair [in 1869, America’s 'Atlantic Monthly' and England’s 'MacMillan’s' published a notorious exposé entitled 'The True Story of Lady Byron’s Life' by Harriet Beecher Stowe]. The original envelope is included. |
