Title | Letter from Harriet Martineau, Ambleside to unknown recipient, addressed as 'Madam', 29 Oct [18]62 |
Extent | 1 item |
Date | 1862 |
Description | Letter sent in response to an enquiry for a character reference for Sarah Dovaston, a former employee in a domestic capacity. Martineau strongly advises against employing her: 'I am compelled to say that she is a worthless girl' and that 'she left this place for dishonesty'. She offers some explanation of how she came to employ her for six months and ends by saying 'happily, she has some property, & need not be driven to ruin by not getting a place' |
