This group of Islands was known as the New Hebrides and was administered as a condominium jointly by Britain and France from 1906 until independence in 1980 under the new name. Its most notable new religious movements have been the Jon/John Frum and Nagriamel (associated with Jimmy Stevens), and the latter was involved in the revolt that threatened the new state at its birth
