Title
Tonga
Description
This is the only surviving independent Polynesian kingdom. After being a British protectorate from 1900 it became an independent member of the Commonwealth in 1970. A Methodist form of Christianity is predominant, with the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga as a notable secession encouraged by a white missionary, S. W. Baker. The Red Coat Movement of the 1960s has been a more synthetist development by a prophetess. Some new forms of Tongan Churches began to appear among immigrants to New Zealand in the 1970s
