Description | This is a sequence of incoming letters received by Joseph Chamberlain, in his capacity as Secretary of State for the Colonies, during 1903; the original arrangement in which it was found has been retained; the letters were bundled alphabetically by correspondent's surname, and then ordered chronologically within these divisions; individual items within the bundles were also enclosed in wrappers on which details of the name of the correspondent, date of document and summary of the content were recorded; the bundles and item wrappers have all been retained; the correspondence consists of diverse inquiries from individuals, and commercial and professional organisations, relating to domestic and colonial affairs, and includes requests for introductions to the Secretary of State for the Colonies and petitions for his intervention and assistance in a variety of unofficial matters; it also includes communications from within the Colonial Office, and various printed material (including illustrations), photographs, press cuttings, memoranda, calling-cards, post-cards and telegrams |
