Description | Letter written from 40 Prince's Gardens [London], dated 14 August. Chamberlain writes to Lady Dorothy [1826-1913] about R[andolph] C[hurchill]'s trip to Birmingham [Lord Randolph Henry Spencer Churchill, 1849-1895; MP Birmingham, 1884-5; South Paddington, 1885-95; Secretary of State for India, 1885-1886; Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1886-1887]. Chamberlain reports: 'He offended everyone, including some of his warmest supporters truly succeeded in delighting the Gladstonians. If he were to stand now against [Bright?] he would get a well-deserved licking'. He closes by discussing the possibility of seeing Lady Dorothy before he leaves for Egypt in November. |
