Description | Correspondence concerning Chamberlain, Sir Oliver Lodge [1851-1940; physicist; Knighted 1902] and the University of Birmingham with Chamberlain writing from either 40, Prince's Gardens [London] or Highbury, Birmingham. Most are outgoing letters written by, or on behalf of, Chamberlain during his time as first Chancellor of the University (1900-1914), starting with his approaching Lodge about the possibility of taking up the position of Prinicipal, a role Lodge was subsequently to hold for nearly two decades (1900 to 1919). Chamberlain discusses University activities, policies, fundraising, and plans for the development of departments and buildings. He also corresponds with Lodge about changes in educational policy. Chamberlain's passion and high expectations for the new University are evident throughout. |
