Description | Letter written from Highbury, Birmingham dated 1 November and marked as 'Private'. Chamberlain praises Russell [1834-1920, first Baron Russell of Liverpool, newspaper editor and proprietor] for his clear views and sound principles. He writes that whilst many politicians are guided by 'hand to mouth considerations' both he and Russell are committed to certain principles. He hopes that they can correspond 'freely and confidentially' and further their common goals. In a postscript he adds that he agrees with Russell about Ireland, writing: 'The government of Ireland by this country is impossible on existing terms. There must be a radical change sooner or later - and the sooner the better'. |
