TitleLetter from Joseph Chamberlain to E[dward] R. Russell
Extent1 item
Date1884
DescriptionLetter written from 40 Prince's Gardens [London] dated 17 March. Chamberlain approves of Russell's [1834-1920, first Baron Russell of Liverpool, newspaper editor and proprietor] articles and replies to Mr Forwood. He writes that opposition to the Shipping Bill has not slackened but expresses his belief that the public could be convinced of the 'importance of immediate legislation' if it weren't for the Franchise Bill and Egypt dominating public attention. In a postscript he criticises a Tory newspaper for claiming that his policy has been introduced in order to improve his brother's investment in a shipping company.
