Description | Letter written from Highbury, Birmingham dated 30 May and marked 'Private'. Chamberlain writes that he is 'gratified' by Russell's letter [JCLAdd/444]. He comments that Russell [1834-1920, first Baron Russell of Liverpool, newspaper editor and proprietor] has managed to follow Gladstone and yet avoid the 'bitterness' and 'indignity' which other men of conviction have been drawn into. Chamberlain regrets the present state of the Liberal Party but hopes that in the future he will be able to work alongside Russell again, in pursuit of 'the old objects'. |
