He urges him as 'an old friend' to always give references when quoting figures, and suggests that statistics from the 'Blue Book' are not necessarily 'trustworthy' on the points cited by Chamberlain. He writes that it is with 'great regret' that he finds himself 'disapproving' of the line taken by Chamberlain, and warns him that his appeal to 'Protectionists' will 'array free traders against him', 26 October
